Through my SDS I practice graphic design with various projects such as creating t-shirt designs and logos. Work Based Learning Spotlight: Allera Roberts, Hiawatha World
My name is Allera Roberts. I’m a Junior and I’m doing my SDS at the Hiawatha World. I’ve learned a lot while job shadowing Joey May, the newspapers editor. I’ve written several articles, taken photos at Redhawk sporting events, and learned a great deal about writing. On an average day I go to the office and get my assignment for the day. Usually it’s something like finishing up an article, taking pictures around town, or scheduling an interview for a story. I really enjoy my SDS, because Joey always makes it enjoyable and makes me feel like a real part of the HW team. Overall my SDS is doing an amazing job at preparing me for a career in this field, as well as teaching me a plethora of skills like AP Style, and the upside down pyramid. This job is readying me for a career in the Journalism. I’ve already toured KU’s Journalism school and spent a week of my summer there for Journalism Camp. So I’ve felt well equipped during my SDS and I can’t wait to learn more about this field! (Photo from when I photographed the home XC meet)

On Wednesday Nov. 15th, the Art Appreciation class, as well as a Portfolio student, went on a field trip to the Yost Art Gallery on Highland Community College's campus.
The exhibit was the HCC Faculty Art Show, displaying the artworks of Brigitte Bruna and Sam Perkins.
