Work Based Learning Spotlight: Beckett Potter, Brown County Area Agency on Aging
Hello, my name is Beckett Potter. I am a senior at Hiawatha High school. I am doing my workplace experience at the Brown County Area Agency on Aging. This is a new experience for me because I am learning so much about how an office operates. Here they have me learning their filing maintenance system. They taught me how to type labels on a typewriter. This has been somewhat of a challenge for me that I have now mastered, since I had never typed on a typewriter before. Once I have typed up the labels and adhered it to the file folders, I file away all the folders. When I am not working on the filing maintenance system, I am helping them with the preparation of food distribution. This is where I help them fill boxes and load them on the trucks to be sent out to their locations. I am hoping that I will be able to learn more office skills on the computer side before the end of the semester. Overall, I feel that this workplace experience has helped me with office skills, organization skills, communication and working with people within the office setting. These are necessary skills that everyone needs to know with any career.

Varsity Scholar's Bowl placed third at the Sabetha High School varsity meet last night!

Work Based Learning Spotlight: Ethan Henry, Maximum Realty.
My name is Ethan Henry, and I visit Maximum Realty Inc. to further my career exploration. I observe, study, and follow one of Maximum's real estate agents every other day as they go through the steps involved in either helping a client purchase or sell their house. I chose to follow my interests and get firsthand experience in real estate as I'm interested in pursuing a career in this field. I assist with creating home advertisements and uploading properties online for Maximum Realty. My favorite part of my exploration is going through the homes, making advertisement videos, and observing client showings. I have learned that the duties of real estate agents are not easy, it takes a lot of marketing, patience, intelligence, and communication when helping a client make one of the biggest purchases they will ultimately make in their lifetime. Seeing how a real estate agent works, how a realty office is run, and how real estate agents interact with clients has helped me realize that this is a field of work that I would like to pursue.

Caution: graphic pictures of a dissection.
Jodi Twombly, with Amberwell Hiawatha, brought in pig hearts to dissect for the HMS Science Olympiad Anatomy & Physiology team. According to Aya McPeak, A & P team member, "That was the coolest thing to be able to actually touch and put our hands in the different chambers, valves, and vessels." Thank you Jodi for this amazing experience and something the students will remember for a long time! Thanks also to Jason Hinkle, who provided the hearts. 🔴🔵 #HMSRedHawks #USD415 #RedHawkReady #Hiawathaks #HiawathaKansas #VisitHiawatha 🔴🔵

Workbased Learning Spotlight: Shelby Shughart, Teaching Internship at Hiawatha Elementary School. I shadow Mrs. Robyn in the ECSE (preschool) classroom and I also shadow Mrs. Bannister in the first grade classroom. While shadowing both of these teachers I have been given the opportunity to learn what different elementary grade levels are like. I have done things like help the preschool students learn their numbers and count. I also help them learn letters and colors. In first grade I am there during Reading WIN time, and I get to help students read and become fluent at learning words and non sense words. I chose to intern at the elementary school because I enjoy helping kids and I am planning to go to college for elementary education. I have been very grateful for this opportunity to learn and experience new things!

Hiawatha FFA hosted a Veterans Day celebration today. Both middle school & high school students attended. Thank you to all who have served or are currently serving. 🇺🇸

For the last few weeks during Exploratories with Mrs. Diller, Miss Kelly and Mrs. Mathewson, the classes have been building structures that will hold a small pumpkin at least 2 inches off the ground. They were able to use a variety of supplies but had to come up with their own ideas for how to build it. We saw a lot of different styles of structures and many of their ideas worked!

First grade is continuing to learn about U.S. symbols and traditions. Mrs. Diller taught the entire first grade during our Social Studies time. She introduced the songs “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” with some fun movements to each song. Thank you Mrs. Diller!
