The Phyllis Jeanne Byer Kidwell Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior attending full time at any post-secondary school. This year's recipient is Raven Stroud.

The Deputy Todd Widman Memorial Scholarship is given in honor and remembrance of the ultimate sacrifice made by Brown County Deputy Todd Michael Widman, a 1997 graduate of Hiawatha High School. Deputy Widman gave his life for the citizens in Brown County in 2001. This year’s recipient are: Austin Coffelt, Abigail Lowe, Cynthia Law and Makayla Pilcher.
Genevieve Strahan was a lifelong resident of Brown County. She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1929 and attended college at Washburn University and Emporia State Teachers’ College, graduating in 1933. She was a long time public school teacher and administrator. The 2021 Genevieve Strahan Scholarship is awarded to Ethan Pruitt.

Citizens State Bank and Trust Scholarship is given to a graduating senior from Hiawatha High School who will be attending Highland Community College. Selection of the recipient is made by members of the Citizen’s State Bank. This year, the Citizen’s State Bank Scholarship is awarded to Athena Garza.

Dale Strahan was a lifelong resident of Brown County. He was an avid golfer and a lifetime member of both the Hiawatha Country Club and Horton Country Club. The Dale Strahan Scholarship is awarded to individuals seeking a career in golf management or who have participated in high school golf. This year the scholarship is awarded to Mitchell Bryan.

Fahrendorff/Dickinson Scholarship was established in memory of Alice Dickinson Fahrendorff, a 1944 graduate of Hiawatha High School. Alice and husband Raleigh shared a desire to promote opportunities for self-advocacy and saw education as an investment in one’s future. This year’s recipient of the Fahrendorff/Dickinson Scholarship is Brenna Diller.

The Kay L. Hilton Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Hiawatha High School who will be studying nursing at any accredited post-secondary institution. Begun in 2010, this nursing scholarship is given by Robert Hilton in memory of his wife, Kay, who spent several years fighting cancer. Robert and Kay were always impressed with her nurses and the scholarship has been established to honor those who cared so well for her. This year’s recipient is Caitlyn Monhollon.

Kiley Ramey lost her life in a car accident while a student at Hiawatha High School. The Kiley Ramey Memorial Scholarship was put in place by Gary and Linda Ramey in remembrance of their daughter. Kiley’s scholarship emphasizes service to others. Mrs. Kiley was known for wearing her heart on her sleeve. She always wanted to help the kids that were bullied in school and encourage others to “Be bold, be courageous, be your best!” ** The year’s award goes to Raven Stroud.

Roberta C. Burgert Scholarship is in honor of Ms. Roberta C. Burgert.
She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1917 and began her life-long career as an educator that very year. Teaching first grade was her favorite. She retired in 1970 and returned to Hiawatha, where she pursued favorite hobbies of painting, playing the saxophone, piano and organ, and growing flowers. Throughout her life, she enjoyed nurturing children's minds and flowers--both very beautiful things. She passed away in 2000. This year’s recipients are Nicole Stueve and Austin Coffelt.


The Ruth Cox Scholarship is awarded to a graduating female senior attending a two-year or four-year college. This year, the Ruth Cox Scholarship is awarded to Athena Garza.

Sarah E. Crow Scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior attending a two-year or four-year college. This year, the Sarah E. Crow Scholarship is awarded to MAKAYLA PILCHER
The Delbert Larson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Hiawatha High School Senior who is majoring in Math/ Science in a Community College, 4-year university or College. This year's recipient is Katherine Madsen.
The Susan McElroy Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Hiawatha High School who is enrolled in a university, college, community college, or trade school. Financial need, academic achievement, community involvement, and work history will be considered. The Susan McElroy Memorial Scholarship began in 2012 in memory of Susan by her husband Norval McElroy. Susan worked as a paraprofessional for 20 years at Hiawatha Elementary School and was the Hiawatha Aquatic Park manager for 15 years. Recipients are Ashlynn Henry & Abigail Lowe
Hiawatha District Education Association
For many years, the Hiawatha District Education Association has awarded a scholarship to a deserving senior who shows an interest in majoring in education. This year’s recipient is Ethan Pruitt.

The Kiwanis Club Scholarship is offered to area Hiawatha students who are incoming freshmen to a college in Kansas. This year’s recipients are:
Mithcell Bryan, Ethan Pruitt, Katherine Madsen and Ashlynn Henry.

The Senior Artist of the Year Award is based on a devotion to art, quality of artwork, and involvement in art events. This year’s recipients are Athena Garza and Raven Stroud.

State Farm Community Involvement Scholarship Present by Ryan Meininger, State Farm Agent is intended to reward a history of community involvement for a deserving senior, with plans to pursue any form of post-secondary education or training, with consideration to participation in extracurricular activities, community clubs or other active groups that benefit the community, as well as individual experience serving the community, along with overall personal academic success. This year the committee decided to honor four recipients: Brenna Diller, Trent Kolb, Alex Rockey & Makayla Pilcher.
Agriculture Future of America Scholarship
The AFA Scholarship was first awarded in the Hiawatha area in 2001. The purpose of A.F.A. is to serve as a catalyst in the preparation of a new generation of agriculture leaders. It seeks out the most talented young people dedicated to becoming leaders in the field of agriculture. This scholarship is made possible by individuals and companies in our area who believe in the goals of A.F.A. and is awarded to seniors who are seeking a 4-year degree in the field related to agriculture. This year’s award winner is Jocelyn Dvorak.
