The first grade students are taking their character word of the month, citizenship into action! To show good citizenship in our community, the first graders will be adopting the Crestview Park this school year.
Students met with Hiawatha Parks and Recreation Director Stacy Jasper today to learn about her role as the parks director.
The first graders went to Crestview Park and brainstormed ways to help keep our park clean for members of the community to enjoy! They plan to pick up trash, organize the books, pull weeds, and any other tasks they see are needed.
The first graders are excited to show good citizenship in our community.

Guest Readers Needed
Our Hiawatha Elementary School is looking for community members to volunteer to read to our students throughout the school year. Our students love when they get to experience a read aloud with members of our community. This experience allows students to create connections, build relationships and supports our mission to encourage and enable students to function as positive, contributing citizens. If you are interested in being a guest reader in our building, please reach out to Nicki Mathewson at nmathewson@usd415.org. You will be asked to provide your name and contact information. Guest readers will be placed on a list of available readers that teachers can choose from when they are in need of a guest reader for their classroom. Please reach out with any questions you may have about this opportunity. We look forward to partnering with our community to create the best educational experience for our students. Sincerely, Mrs. Mathewson USD 415 District Librarian nmathewson@usd415.org 🔴🔵 #HESRedHawks #HHSRedHawkAlumni #USD415 #RedHawkReady #Hiawathaks #HiawathaKansas #VisitHiawatha 🔴🔵

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
We will be offering an after school program at HMS for all students in grades 5-8. The program will begin on Tuesday, September 5. Most of the year the program will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, in September we will only go on Mondays and Tuesdays. It will provide students with some one-on-one or group tutoring. We will focus on the curriculum that is being taught in the students’ classrooms. This will include help with homework, remediation of skills the students are struggling with, or extra practice in current topics within their classes. We will also have some enrichment activities each day for 30 minutes. These will change monthly and the students will have a chance to sign up each month for the activity they are interested in. Tentative details are listed below:
Class time is 3:30-5:00
From 3:30-4:00 students will enjoy a snack and activity time
It will run on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, with the exception of September as outlined above. Please call the middle school office to let them know if your student will be absent.
There will be no after school program on Wednesdays or Fridays
The program will be held at Hiawatha Middle School
A grab and go snack will be provided to all students at no cost.
Transportation will not be provided for students involved in the after-school program.
The after-school program is not a year-long commitment. Students can sign up each month for the after school program. Each month we will have different choices for the enrichment activities that can could include cooking club, arts, physical activity, community service, and many more.
We will also be offering a power hour time for any students that are on the ineligible list. These students will also be provided a snack and tutoring with a teacher to help them bring their grade up so they can be eligible for sports and school activities. Power hour will only last until 4:30. Students will have the choice to join one of the enrichment activities, return to sports practice, or leave for the day. Students attending power hour do not have to stay until 5:00.
If you would like your student to take part in the after school program or have any questions about after school program. please contact Kim Krauter, School Counselor, at Hiawatha Middle School at 785-742-4172 or by email, kkrauter@usd415.org.

4th grade students are being given the opportunity to take on leadership roles in our building as great role models. One of those leadership roles includes being a morning greeter. We’ve discussed how to have a good greeting: making eye contact, positive body language, and using a loud and clear voice. Sophia and Ava were wonderful greeters this morning!!

There were lots of giggles in Miss Riley’s room today during morning meeting. Students were to take off one shoe and place it in the middle of the circle. When a student was chosen, they grabbed a shoe from the middle, matched it to the person it belongs to, and said good morning! This was a fun and silly way to start our day together.
