8th grade STEM students have enjoyed our aeroponic growing system, Tower Garden. We had a harvest party and enjoyed different kale smoothies and salads!

Hiawatha High School Schedule change - Monday, October 14th will be an A day.
The HHS environmental studies students have a prediction of the winter ahead. Looking at the inside of a persimmon seed to use as a prediction of winter weather is supposedly accurate 75% pf the time. In the prairie behind the school are several persimmon trees. The students walked down to the prairie area, gathered persimmon fruits, and sliced the seeds open. The large majority of the seeds say we will be having a harsh winter. So, good luck. Stay warm.

Nurse Heather Gildersleeve is our recipient! On a daily basis she has to handle so many different issues. And she does so with a caring gentle manner. Sports in Science class designed four exercise stations to see how exercise effect heart rate. Today’s student led station was conducted by Alexander Hinton & Elijah Gallagher, the student had to push a football sled various distance and record heart rate. It was a big hit!
Some of our second graders have been hard at work with Miss Barb on a fantastic readers theater project. This engaging activity helps develop fluency through repeated exposure to text, boosts comprehension, and integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a fun way. We're so proud of their efforts! Keep up the great work, second graders!

Students in 7/8 STEM in the Real World class have been working on learning applications of microbes. This week, we had Amy Elliott from Amberwell Lab Services come and help us with an experiment. Students had four different samples of food, two which had sat out all night. Amy taught students how to culture bacteria, differences in agar plates and identifying bacteria forms once it grew. She even had slides of our bacteria to look at under a microscope. Thanks Amy!
Natural Disasters students have been learning about earthquakes. Students researched, designed, and built a structure using toothpicks and marshmallows to withstand a simulated earthquake using a "jello" shake table.
Smile mile on Monday October 7 and Tuesday Oct 8. Remember to wear comfy clothes and tennis shoes reruns will be Oct 10 and 15.
