Dear Parent & Students

Welcome back! We are excited to see all of our students this week at Hiawatha High School! The staff have been working very hard to prepare for this upcoming year, whatever that may look like. We are proud of the work they have done to prepare for this new adventure. Although there are several changes to the schedule, lunch, arrival and dismissal, our number one priority is to make each and every student feel safe while being successful at school.

We will welcome our 9th grade students on Wednesday, September 2. All students will report on Thursday, September 3. This will be an A Day. Friday, September 4 will be a B Day.

The building will open at 7:50 am. Students will report directly to their first hour classes. Breakfast will be served in a “grab and go” format. Therefore, the kids who wish to eat breakfast at school, will grab their breakfast, take it to their first hour and eat it there. Class starts at 8:10 a.m. Therefore, students can arrive anytime between 7:50 a.m. and 8:09 a.m. and not be counted as tardy. Students arriving before 7:50 am will remain outside and should practice social distancing. Upon entrance to the building, students will have their temperature taken with a thermal camera.

As per district guidelines masks are required to be worn at all times in USD 415 facilities . However, scheduled breaks will take place. USD #415 has purchased 2 masks for each student.

  • Nurse Erin will hand these out as students enter on the first day of school
  • Students may wear their own masks provided that they follow the school dress code policy for appropriate wear

We will provide 1 water bottle per student. Each student will receive theirs during their advisory class. Students may bring their own water bottle, however only water will be permitted. If a student purchased a yearbook last year, those will also be handed out during advisory on September 3.

Our lunch procedure will also be modified. Some students will be eating in classrooms, some in the commons and some outside (weather permitting).

Dismissal procedures have also changed. Walkers, car riders, and student drivers will be dismissed by pod. Bus riders will remain in classes until called for dismissal. Students riding a bus will be required to wear a mask and sit with families.

The high school office hours will also be changing this year. The office will be staffed from 7 a.m. until 4:15 p.m.

Again we are excited to see you this week and look forward to a great year regardless of the circumstances! If you have any questions, please call the HHS office at 785-742-3312.

Sincerely,

Lori Fordyce
