by Molly Brobst & Antuan Grier
April 13, 2008
A group of students in the Computer Applications class at Hiawatha High School were asked to poll the student body about something of interest. The group of Molly Brobst and Antuan Grier chose to poll the students about whom they thought were the best athletes in sports including football, basketball, and baseball. The poll included a variety of students from each grade, including a few adults that work at the school. About 32% of the high school population was polled for the survey. Each group in the class had to have a different survey to ask the students, so that in the end, everybody could use the other group's database of information to see how they related. Some of the other class polls included favorite candy colors, favorite places to shop, and favorite movies. They could then see if the information correlated with each other, for instance if people liked a specific boxer, would they all like the same type of movie?
In this survey of Hiawatha High School, they asked the question, what are your favorite sports players? The sports, Antuan and Molly, asked specifically about were football, basketball, baseball, boxing, and then an overall best athlete. The survey included 81 people, with 12 of them being freshmen, 27 sophomores, 20 juniors, 19 seniors, and 3 adults. Out of the people polled, only 32 were female and the other 49 were males.
In the survey, not very many people could agree on the best athlete of each category. Peyton Manning was voted best football player by 21% of the people interviewed, with most of the votes coming from the sophomores. In basketball, 37% of the polled thought that Michael Jordan was the best that they've heard of. With 41% out of the 81 people interviewed, they chose Babe Ruth as the best baseball athlete of all time. The best boxer was Muhammad Ali, with about 44% of the people agreeing about him. Along with being the best basketball player, the best overall athlete was voted to be Michael Jordan with 43% of the population for this poll voting for him.
In accordance to the data, questions were asked to further summarize the data and draw together the database and the databases of other groups. The most popular questions asked were as so: How many people said that Ali was the best boxer and also said Babe Ruth was the best baseball player? According to the portion of the sophomore class that said Ali was the best boxer, what was their favorite place to shop? Who was the overall favorite basketball player? According to the data of the people who most liked Michael Jordan as their favorite basketball player, what was their favorite movie to see? A surprise to absolutely no one, the best overall basketball player was surprise, surprise, Michael Jordan. For the question pertaining to the boxer Ali and the favorite place to shop, the favorite place to shop for people who most liked Ali was Target. The people, who most liked Michael Jordan as their favorite basketball player, said that their overall favorite movie was Fight Club. The final question asked was how many people picked M.J. for their favorite basketball player and also picked Babe Ruth for their favorite baseball player, and according to the data there were 18 people who favored both MJ and Babe Ruth.
Many people were polled but, very few people agreed with each other on the topic of the best athletes ever which is understandable with such a wide variety of choices over the years. The athletes voted the best in these categories won by a very slim range. The players that were voted best were Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts, Michael Jordan, former player of the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards, Babe Ruth former player for the New York Yankees, and Muhammad Ali, former boxer. Overall, the choices for the best athletes of all time were very good. In comparison to the data of other groups though, there was also a wide variety of choices for best movie and favorite place to shop.
