Miss Spielman's Peek at the Week
For the Week of: November 22-26, 2010
Balanced Literacy:
We will continue to discuss last weeks words. Thanks to Michael's family for working on that contraction page. Together, they made a list of all the contraction words they could think of, for example: couldn't = could + not, can't = can + not. If you have not yet made this contraction sheet with your child, try to do that this week. Students who bring in this sheet will earn a gumball.
Guided Reading:
This week, the students worked very hard to learn about a specific Native American tribe. I am very proud of the effort the students put into this project. Ask your child about his/her tribe and some interesting facts that they learned.
Math:
We took the Chapter 3 math test on Friday. For this short week, the students are going to work in partners to determine the cost of putting on a Thanksgiving Dinner for 10 people. If you have any Thanksgiving grocery store ads around your house, could you please send them to school with your child on Monday? We will be using these to help determine the cost of our Thanksgiving Dinner items.
Math Facts:
We are currently taking a timed test every other day. The kids are progressing through these tests pretty well, although there are some students that are stuck on their current letter. The best way to get better with our math facts is to practice. When the timed sheets get sent home, please spend one or two minutes an evening practicing the facts orally with your child. This will benefit the kids tremendously! You'll be surprised at how fast the kids can fire these problems out of their mouths!
Homework:
There was a Frames & Arrows homework sheet sent home this week. It is due on Tuesday, November, 23. Please work on that with your child and send it back to school. The students pointed out to me that there is a mistake on #3. If you guys can find it, and tell me where the mistake is, students can earn a penny good for a gumball.
Other News:
PLEASE continue to send your child to school with a coat. Fall (maybe Winter, too?) has now arrived. We do go outside for recess and it is sometimes very cold.
I will be gone on Monday afternoon. I will be back in time for Family Math Night. I hope to see your families here! We will be practicing our math facts throughout the evening. I know the students would love to show you what they are doing, and how they are progressing!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to drop in, send me an email ([email protected]) or give me a call at school.
Have a Wonderful Week!
