 HIAWATHA HIGH SCHOOL ART 2007-2008

This year’s art program has been really great. Talent was very apparent from all grade levels. SENIOR James Reynolds has shown outstanding work this year, JUNIOR Tyler Holloway has done amazing ink work, SOPHOMORE Verdell Haws has entertained the class with his sense of imagination, and FRESHMAN Lyvia Grier has brought a lot of new talent and hard work to the table. All of these students are strong in different areas and show great workmanship and pride in their masterpieces.

There are a variety of art classes available to students at Hiawatha High School. Some of the art classes include: Art I, Art II, Ceramics I, Ceramics II, Painting and Drawing, Commercial Art, and Independent Study. All of these classes teach fundamentals of art and new ways to improve your personal skills. The teacher at Hiawatha High School, in the art department, is Laurie Jorgensen. Mrs. Jorgensen is very skilled in all areas of art and works hard to teach students how to better their skills. She will be retiring after this school year.

This year in the art room there has been a lot of creativity and hard work in the air. There were a lot of art show placers. At the GFWC of Kansas there were 10 blue ribbons, 12 red ribbons, and 4 yellow ribbons. Those who placed first, with a blue ribbon are: Lyvia Grier (freshman), Corie Hocker (senior), Landon Farrar (freshman), Tyler Holloway (junior), Sarah Jimeson (freshman), Joel Denton (senior), Kloi Hinkle (junior), Stephanie Wilhelm (senior), and Jessica Schulenberg (sophomore). The art work categories included: sculpture, drawing, ceramics, and commercial art.

There are some interesting comments from some of the "regulars" in the art room about this year and this is what they had to say:

“We had a really good year, a lot of freshman potential. I was pleased. What I will miss the most is interacting with young artists." -Ms. Jorgensen

“I will miss being the bestJ, because when in college I will be a freshman again”-James Reynolds

“James is the best!”  -Joel Denton

Students need their rest and the HCC lawn was just the place for the art students to relax thier creative minds after a long day at Highland Art.

“I have improved so much on my work ethic!"  -Keith Boyer

“My favorite thing about this year was my ceramic dragon named Oliver." -Jessica Schulenberg

“ART ROCKS MY SOCKS OFF!”  -Kloi Hinkle

This year was a great year for art at HHS. A lot of people improved and have grown in their creative mind and unique techniques. The new art teacher will hopefully bring us new ideas and a different view. Ms. Jorgensen has been at HHS for many years and has improved student skills greatly. If you see her around town give her a hug and thank her for all the great years she dedicated to Hiawatha High School. Art is one of the most expressive class available at Hiawatha High School and deserves a lot more recognition. Look around and ask yourself if you can find anything that was NOT created? EXACTLY!
