Curriculum Change in the Applied Technology Room

The Applied Technology Classes has changed their curriculum for seventh and eighth grade classes to nine week courses in order to provide the students more options for exploratory classes that meet their interests. Along with art classes, these nine week courses will give the students more focused choices for their elective classes.
The Applied Technology classroom would be divided into two areas of study for each hour. The family science courses would be as follows:
Foods 1 – This would be an exploration of foods and health. The class would utilize the Lab-Volt curriculum as well as lecture and hands on experience. Students will become familiar with the kitchen and safety rules. They will utilize the Lab-Volt programs Snack Attack, Wake Up Call, and Food for Thought. They will do a NCA research paper on health and nutrition.
Foods 2 – This would be another look at foods and food choices. The class would utilize the Lab-Volt curriculum as well as lecture and hands on experience. The Lab Volt programs Wellness and Nutrition and How Sweet It Is would be utilized. The Kansas Beef Grant would also be used during this class to bring in beef recipes.
Sewing – This would be the quilt unit. Students will learn safety rules for the sewing lab. They will learn the different parts of the sewing machine and how to use the sewing machine. Students will sew the quilt.
Personal Relationships and Management – This would be an exploration of how people relate to each other. Also included would be management (time and money) units. The class would utilize the Lab-Volt curriculum as well as hands on experience. The Lab-Volt programs Interpersonal Relationships, Better Shop Around, Dollars and Sense, and Family Life would be utilized. Students will use power point to make a presentation of information learned.
Home Care – This would be an exploration of home and family care. The class would utilize the Lab-Volt curriculum as well as hands on experience. Students will utilize the Lab-Volt programs Wash Away, Living Spaces, Child Care, and Fixer Upper.
