Third Grade has Gone to the Birds

The third grade has been studying about different habitats in science. We just finished up a unit on studying birds and deciding what habitat they live in by observing their beaks and feet
Our first experience was investigating how a bird's beak determines the food it eats, hence its habitat. We took different tools that represented different shaped beaks and tried to eat different foods. We were able to match the beaks with a certain type food.
We were real scientists the day we dissected owl pellets. We were able to determine the food the owl ate by the bones we found in the pellet.
We finished our unit by taking a learning trip to Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge. We saw many habitats and birds, such as American coots, pelicans, geese and ducks. Our greatest find was an eagle sitting on her eggs. "It was awesome." in the words of third graders.
