Red Hawks Prefer Red Candy

Becky Barnes & Lindsy Brobst

April 13, 2008

Have you ever noticed that you tend to eat a certain color of candy more than the rest? There is always that one particular color that tastes or looks better. As a project for Computer Applications class, a small group of students decided to poll other students from the high school to see which colors were their favorites. Becky Barnes and Lindsy Brobst were able to compare colors of Skittles, M&M's, Gummy Bears, Shockers, Nerds, Mike & Ikes, and Chewy Sprees. After polling 100 students, they compared genders and grades to get the general idea of the favorite candy colors in the school. Then the group compared their findings with those of favorite athletes, actors, and even favorite shopping centers.
There are about two hundred and fifty students in the high school, and one hundred took the candy survey. The students were split almost fifty-fifty between girls and boys with fifty-four girls and forty-six boys. Between the classes there was a greater variety. There were thirty-seven freshmen, thirteen sophomores, twenty-eight juniors, and twenty-two seniors. This helped Becky and Lindsy to compare genders and grades more accurately.

When comparing the favored candy colors, Becky and Lindsy noticed red was the most predominant color chosen. Skittles, Chewy Sprees, Mike & Ikes, and Gummy Bears favored the majority color, red. However, blue was the preferred color of M&M's and Shockers. Nerds were the only candy with pink as the favorite color. Orange was the least chosen color of Gummy Bears and Nerds. Yellow Shockers and clear Mike & Ikes were also chosen the least. Only one person favored purple M&M's. Both Skittles and Chewy Sprees had pink as their least favorite color. Females and males both prefer red skittles. The class with red as their most popular color of Chewy Sprees was the juniors.
After comparing the different candy colors, the group made queries showing favorite actors, athletes, and shopping centers. People who like Michael Jordan chose brown and green as their favorite colors of M&M's. Red and green Skittles are preferred by those who enjoy shopping at Wal-Mart. Red Gummy Bears and Will Ferrel have a unique connection. One female and two males like watching Will Ferrel while eating red Gummy Bears. People who like red Skittles are attracted to people with brown eyes. Four people who shop at American Eagle like red and purple Chewy Sprees. There were also four people who like brown hair and Michael Jordan.
In wrapping this up, the class learned a lot about making and using queries in databases and found out some interesting things about their classmates. Learning what traits they look for in others, what sports stars they like, and what candy would make a good birthday gift were all part of the fun of taking these surveys. The Computer Applications class spent a lot of time in making these surveys and asking their peers to fill out these surveys, but it taught them a lot and was fun.
