Extemporaneous is an event in which each participant will draw three topics from a bank of domestic and foreign topics. As soon as the topic is chosen, the speaker will have 30 minutes to prepare a speech on that topic. The speaker will be able to consult sources brought to the contest including magazines, books, etc. This is a great event for someone who can formulate thoughts quickly (and accurately) and has prior knowledge of worldly topics. Brief notes may be used when delivering the speech. The speech shall be no longer than seven minutes.
Serious Solo Acting is an acting event in which the entire stage area may be used. The selection, including the introduction, can be no longer than ten minutes in length. This selection will be taken from published works of serious literature including play scripts, short stories, novels, poetry and published television or movie scripts. The selection must be memorized and given without notes. A chair may be used in this event.
Humorous Solo Acting is an acting event in which the entire stage area may be used. The selection, including the introduction, can be no longer than ten minutes in length. The selection will be taken from published works of humorous literature including play scripts, short stories, novels, poetry and published television or movie scripts. The selection must be memorized and given without notes. A chair may be used in this event.
Duet Acting is an acting event in which two students “portray a memorized ten minutes cutting from a published work of literature.” The performance may incorporate the use of two chairs and a table. The cutting may be humorous or serious and must come from a published work such as a short story, novel or play script.
In Oral Interpretation of Poetry, the speaker will recite published poetry beginning with an introduction. The material must be read from a printed manuscript, and the presentation should last no longer than seven minutes.
Improvised Duet Acting (IDA) is an improvised acting exercise composed of two students who portray an original scene created after drawing the subject. The scene should establish two characters, a situation or problem, and a solution to the conflict. Each IDA team will draw three topics from the areas of character, situation, and location. The duo will then select two of the characters, one situation and one location. The duo will then have thirty minutes to prepare a four to seven minute scene.
Original Oration is a memorized, organized speech with a unique approach to a universal theme. This will be the original work of the student and may be no longer than ten minutes in length.
In Informative Speech, the speaker “provides a learning experience for the listener by instruction or by giving information in an interesting manner.” The student will write a speech, which will be no longer than seven minutes in length. The speech must be memorized and given without notes.
The Oral Interpretation of Prose is a prose expressed thought through language recorded in sentences and paragraphs. This may include short stories, novels, articles, essays, journals, or biographies. It may not include anything written in script form. The selection will be read from manuscript and be no longer than seven minutes in length.
