I’ve got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell!!!! Isn’t that the truth? Hallelujah!!!!! The Red Hawk Pep Band grace the bleachers with bari saxophones, saxophones, tubas, trumpets, trombones, clarinets, melophones, baritones, drums, and let’s not forget the cowbell!!!!!!!!!!!!
This year the Red Hawk Marching Band didn’t get a chance to perform in the annual Marysville Bulldog Marching Festival due to some rainy weather. Their marching theme was Pirates of the Caribbean which includes a synchronized field performance and selections from the movie all executed professionally. This was a set back and a disappointment to fellow band members, due to all the hard work they’d put forth. They’re not holding anything back for this current pep band year!
The Red Hawk Pep Band is unstoppable this year. They’ve been working on some new music. Among their repertoire is “ All The Small Things”, “Carry On My Wayward Son”, “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, ”Dangerland”, which is a mix of “Danger Land” and “ Land of A 1,000 Dances”, and a crowd favorite “Zoot Suit Riot.”
“We can’t keep playing the same songs….but the crowd really likes “Zoot Suit Riot,” so let’s give them more of that quality music.” These words are from the mouth of Damian Johnson, the band director at Hiawatha High School. So that’s become the main focus for the pep band this year. Polishing up the current songs, and working on adding new pieces, and pulling some out of the closet that haven’t been touched .The pep band wants to give the crowd something to look forward to. While in band class Mr. Johnson, the band director, quoted a local couple that said they’ve been to many basketball games at a bigger school than Hiawatha’s 3A, and none of them compare to the sound the Red Hawk Pep Band delivers They also said during half time and between games they always go the concession stand because they're not as captivated. Wow, that says a lot right there.
All in all, it’s a great time of the year. The band puts a lot of effort into playing at the basketball games. As a fellow member of the Red Hawk Pep Band, I enjoy throwing my head back and singing “Hey Baby” with the other members. It’s a pleasure and a honor to be held in such high regards by parents, teachers, and other students. Our sound is like nothing you’ve ever heard!
