Updates to Local Scholarship List

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS 2008

Applications are available at the high school guidance center. Fill out a separate application for each scholarship for which you wish to be considered, indicating on the top line of each application the name of the scholarship. Turn in all completed applications to the guidance center by APRIL 1, 2008. (The Moore and Kleppe applications must be submitted to Mike Schmitt’s law office by April 4th at 5:00 p.m.) ALL APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE TYPED!!!

*Middlebrook Scholarships: Usually four scholarships of large amounts are awarded to Hiawatha graduates on the basis of (1) scholastic rank in class and (2) financial need. The graduate must be enrolling in a four-year college program although work may begin at a community college. The applicant must submit a special family comprehensive financial page with the parent’s signature in addition to filling out the local application. This financial page is available in the guidance office.

Kiwanis Club Scholarships: One or more scholarships to Hiawatha High School graduating seniors enrolling in Highland Community College or a vocational-technical college. These are renewable at the end of the freshman year.

Hiawatha District Education Association Scholarship: One $100 or more scholarship is awarded annually to a Hiawatha High School graduate beginning a college program leading to the Bachelor’s degree. Prime consideration is given to those who are going into education.

Sarah E. Crow Memorial Scholarship: A grant of $100 to a Hiawatha High graduate enrolled in a two-year college program as a minimum.

Ruth Cox Scholarship: A grant of $50 or more to a Hiawatha High School female graduate planning to attend a two-year college as a minimum. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of financial need and 3.0 GPA or better scholastic average.

@Phyllis Jeanne Byer Kidwell Memorial Scholarship: A scholarship will be awarded to a Hiawatha High School senior planning to attend full time at either a college, trade school, vo-tech school, or any other school to further their education. The scholarship payment will be awarded upon proof of passing 70% of first semester of post high school education.

Linda Beckett-AAUW Scholarship: A grant of $100 or more to a high school female graduate entering a college program.

Preceptor Gamma Kappa Medical Scholarship: A grant of $250 to a high school graduate entering any medical related field of study. This grant is renewable for $150 for three additional years if the recipient continues in this field of study.

A. B. & Dana Foster Keith Scholarship: A scholarship fund of $250 or more to benefit graduates of Hiawatha High School attending the University of Kansas.

* Elks Lodge 1741 Scholarship: Eight $500 scholarships are awarded annually to seniors from the local Elks Lodge 1741 jurisdiction seeking any type of advanced education or training. (Applicants do not have to be connected with the Elks.) A special application must be used and can be obtained at the guidance center.

Morrill & Janes Scholarship: This $300 scholarship is given to a senior of Hiawatha High School to attend Highland Community College. Selection of the recipient is made by the Morrill & Janes Bank.

Citizen’s State Bank Scholarship: This $300 scholarship is given to a senior of Hiawatha High School to attend Highland Community College. Selection of the recipient is made by the Citizen’s State Bank.

USD #415 Band Boosters Scholarship: A scholarship in the amount of $100 will be awarded to a graduating senior with first preference given to a music major student. It will be awarded primarily on financial need with academic consideration. Members of the selection board will be a music booster committee, high school music teachers, and the counselor. The scholarship will be awarded on High School Recognition night.

Hiawatha Alumni Association: Three $400 scholarships (two college and one vo-tech) will be awarded to Hiawatha High School seniors attending full time at either a university, vo-tech school, trade school or any other school to further their education. One-half of the scholarship payment will be awarded at the beginning of each semester.

Melissa “Missy” Dawn Rieger Memorial Scholarship: A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Hiawatha High School senior who has been active in extra-curricular activities as well as demonstrating academic excellence. The recipients may use the scholarship to attend the college, vo-tech or trade school of their choice.

HHS Student Council Scholarship: A $100 or more scholarship available to any senior attending a vo-tech school, trade school or a two- or four-year college. The scholarship will be based on extra-curricular activities, involvement in one’s community and academic achievement.

Nathan Paul Wright Memorial Scholarship: One or more scholarships of $250 will be awarded to a senior attending Highland Community College, Kansas State University, vo-tech or trade school. First preference will be given to an FFA member or agriculture major.

Drs. Radke, Hannah, & Oltjen Scholarship: A scholarship of $350 will be awarded to a senior of Hiawatha High School to attend a school of their choice.

Sheila Reynolds Memorial Scholarship: A $250 scholarship will be presented to a senior girl of Hiawatha High School who will be attending Highland Community College.

Lisa M. Siebenmorgan-Elliott Memorial Scholarship: A $300 or more scholarship will be awarded to a Hiawatha High School senior who has been active in extra-curricular activities as well as demonstrating academic excellence. The recipient may use the scholarship to attend the college, vo-tech or trade school of their choice.

Red Hawk Booster Club Scholarship: Two $100 scholarships (one boy and one girl) will be awarded to Hiawatha High School graduates attending full time at either a university, vo-tech school, trade school or any other school to further their education. The entire scholarship payment will be awarded at the beginning of the first semester. This scholarship will be available to any student with a GPA of 2.0 or better.

*Darlene J. Schilling Memorial Scholarship: A $50 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Hiawatha High School who attends Highland Community College. In addition to the application, a special financial form must be returned to the guidance department. Financial information shall be confidential and shall not be disclosed at any time.

*Ruth Dannenburg in Memory of Norman Koelliker Scholarship: A $1,000 scholarship is being offered to a male or female planning to attend Kansas State University and major in any field which is related to agriculture. (Special application needed)

Ethel D. Archer & Sara Sue Berg Memorial Scholarship: A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a needy Hiawatha High School graduating senior attending a four-year college. This scholarship is renewable for a second year.

*B.H. Pennel Leadership Scholarship: A $300 award will be given to a senior at Hiawatha High School who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability during their four years. The special application necessary is available in the guidance office.

International Club Scholarship: A $75 scholarship will be given to a deserving foreign language student graduating from Hiawatha High School. The student must demonstrate curiosity, interest, and enthusiasm while working diligently throughout high school in the foreign language area.

*Dennis Tollefson Scholarship: A $500 scholarship ($250 per semester) will be awarded on the basis of need to a Hiawatha High School graduate who is enrolling in a vo-tech program. Special consideration will be given to those attending Beloit Vo-tech in the diesel lmechanics program. A special application and financial form is available in the guidance office.

@*Roy L. & Aleta M. Moore Scholarship: A separate application booklet is available in the guidance office with instructions and forms necessary to apply for this scholarship. Students must have a minimum 2.6 GPA to apply. (2.0 GPA if going to vo-tech). NOTE: APRIL 4th, 5:00 P.M. DEADLINE.

*Fairview High School Scholarship: A $300 scholarship is available for high school graduates who reside within the boundaries of the former District 5 at the time of USD 415 consolidation. A special application is available in the guidance office.

*Genevieve Strahan Scholarship: The recipients must be Hiawatha High School graduates who have attained a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be active in volunteer organizations or community service. First preference is given to individuals seeking an education degree. Amount of award depends on number of applicants awarded. A special application is available in the guidance office.

*Dale Strahan Scholarship: The recipients must be Hiawatha High School graduates who have attained a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be active in volunteer organizations or community service. First preference is given to individuals seeking a career in golf management or have participated in golf in high school. Amount of award depends on number of applicants awarded. A special application is available in the guidance office.

*@McScholar Scholarship: Several $1,000 and $500 and $250 awards are given nationally, regionally, and one award is given locally. To be eligible for this award, the student or the student’s parent must be employed by McDonald’s and work an average of 15 hours per week. If the student is currently employed for less than 15 hours per week due to school activities, but has averaged about 15 hours per week over the course of their employment, the student is eligible. Eligibility can be verified by your employer. Applications can be obtained at the guidance office or from the McDonald’s Restaurant. The national scholarship application is due March 15th, and the regional and local applications are due March 31st.

*John Farms Scholarship: A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Hiawatha High School who will enroll in a community college, a college or a university. The student must have a minimum 2.6 GPA and come from a family engaged in current agriculture operations. A special application is available in the guidance office.

Powhattan American Legion Post 373: A $250 non-renewable scholarship is being offered by the Powhattan American Legion Post 373 to a Hiawatha High School graduating senior. First preference will be given to a needy student planning to attend a four year institution. Students planning to attend a community college may also apply. Please use the common application form.

@*Cecil Kleppe Scholarship: Scholarships are available to graduating seniors who are residents of Brown County. A special application is available in the guidance office. Students must have a minimum 3.3 GPA to apply. (2.0 if going to vo-tech). Note: April 4th Deadline.

*Carol Nigus Memorial Scholarship: A $500 scholarship is available for a graduate of Hiawatha High School who is enrolled as a full-time college student majoring in education and having an interest in completing a Special Education Degree. A special application form may be obtained from the guidance office.

Todd Widman Memorial Scholarship: A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Hiawatha High School senior. The recipient may use the scholarship to attend college, vo-tech, or trade school of their choice.

Vocal Music Boosters Scholarship: This $100 scholarship is available to a senior in vocal music. Consideration will be given to the student who has been actively involved in vocal music throughout their high school career as well as having financial need. This scholarship will be chosen by a group of parents from the music boosters plus the vocal music teacher and the counselor.

Roberta C. Burgert Scholarship: This $500 scholarship will be awarded to individuals of U.S.D. 415 who shall be attending either a two-year or four-year degree program at a university, college or other place of higher learning or an individual attending a vocational technical training program. The criteria for selection of the applicant shall be the financial needs of the applicants. In order to be eligible for an award of a scholarship, the applicant must have at least a 2.33 grade average.

*Chapter HU P.E.O. Scholarships: Two scholarships of $250 each will be given to two graduating females from Hiawatha High School that are attending a college or university.

*Brown County Quail Unlimited Scholarship: This $250 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Hiawatha High School who will enroll in a university or 4-year college after graduation.

*Holle Farms Scholarship: The $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior of Hiawatha High School who will enroll in a university, college, community college or technical school after graduation. The selection of a recipient for the scholarship will be based primarily on academic achievements, participation in extra-curricular activities with emphasis given to FFA, and community involvement, coupled with financial need and evidence of potential success subsequent to graduation.

Melissa “Missy” Newell Memorial Scholarship: A $250 scholarship will be awarded to a Hiawatha High School senior who has achieved success in contributing to community, citizenship, self, as well as academics. First preference will be given to an individual attending the University of Kansas.

Frances and Charles Curless Memorial Scholarship: One scholarship of a minimum of $750 per year will be awarded to a graduate attending the University of Kansas with an interest in a business degree. This scholarship will be renewable for 3 additional years if certain academic standards are met. The recipient will be selected by the KU Business Department with first preference given to Hiawatha High School applicants.

Zenith Chapter #184 Order of Eastern Star Scholarship: A $200 scholarship is awarded annually to a Hiawatha High School senior. A recipient will be chosen on the basis of financial need and 2.5 GPA or better scholastic average.

*Agriculture Future of America (AFA): A sizeable scholarship is available to Hiawatha High School seniors who are seeking a four year degree in the field of agriculture. Candidates will be judged on their application, leadership, activities, an essay, and an interview. Special application packets may be obtained from the Ag Science Department or the guidance office.

*Paul A. & Daisy E. Schuneman Scholarship: Grants and scholarships are available to graduates of Hiawatha High School who attend college and major in education or health care or pursue a trade at a vocational school.

Marcena H. Onstott Scholarship: An award of $1,000 will be given annually to a Hiawatha High School senior who plans to go into an educational teaching field.

*Police Reserves Scholarship: A $300 scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Hiawatha High School who is enrolling in a university, college or community college and seeking a degree in criminal justice or a law enforcement field. Must have a high school GPA of 2.0+. Special application forms in guidance office.

*Hansen Scholarship: A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Hiawatha High Schoool with a 2.6+ GPA who is enrolling in a university, college, community college or trade school. Special application forms in guidance office.

Evan Michael Schuetz Scholarship: A scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Hiawatha High School senior enrolling in a post-secondary educational institution. First preference will be given to those who plan to attend a Vocational Technical College.

*Kiley Ramey Memorial Scholarship: A $500 nonrenewable scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior from Hiawatha High School who will enroll in any form of higher education such as a university, college, community college or trade school.

*Gifford Scholarship: A scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Hiawatha High School who is enrolled in a university, college, community college or trade school
