6th Graders Have a Heart

6th Grade Hearts Sixth grade students enjoyed a
hands-on science activity after studying the Circulatory System.
Mrs. Gibson was able to get several cow and pig hearts to share
with her students. After learning about the circulatory
system, they put rubber gloves on and began exploring the parts of
the heart. Much enthusiasm radiated throughout the room as
they were able to feel inside the different chambers of the hearts.
The students enjoyed themselves whole-heartedly!
Most were surprised with the
size difference between the cow's heart and the pig's heart.
Knowing that their own hearts are approximately the size of
their fists, the students were able to compare the pig's hearts to
their own hearts. They are similarly sized. Another
surprising sight was the thick muscle surrounding the left
ventricle. Being told that the left ventricle is the chamber
with the thickest muscle isn't near as comprehensive as actually
getting to feel the size difference for themselves.
