Mrs. Charles has taught 5th grade Language Arts and American History at Hiawatha Middle School for many years. She loves history, reading, and writing, so it has been a great career. Charles also has always enjoyed kids and teaching of all kinds. She started teaching when she was young- dance, and swimming. This led her to K-State where she studied Elementary Education. Her first teaching job was in Sabetha, KS teaching third grade. She and her husband moved to Hiawatha and she began to teach 6th grade history and language arts in 1992 after a short break staying at home with her young children.
Now Mrs. Charles' 2 children are grown up and living their own lives, and she and her husband are enjoying time out at Mulberry Pond, a place just outside Hiawatha where she holds a summer day camp for kids 10-12 years old, and a pumpkin patch in the fall where kids and their families can have a lot of fun!
As you can see, teaching is a big part of Mrs. Charles' life. "Keep learning as much as you can. Learning can be like solving a mystery," she says.
She hopes you have a great time learning at Hiawatha Middle School.
