Taking Home the Baby
Introduction to Work and Family Class

by Kaitlynn McGinnis
February 01, 2010

In Introduction to Work and Family class at HHS, all students have to take a pretend baby home for a week. This baby is used to show the students that being a teenage parent is not fun and a baby is a lot more responsibility than they are ready for. The baby is only turned off during certain times.

Students have to get up at odd hours of the night in order to care for the baby. They may also have to lose some time to hang out with friends so that they can take care of the baby.  This baby isn’t like any other baby doll, it cries, it is more like a real baby.

“After I took this baby home, I realized that it is a lot easier to take care of a child after you are married and ready to take on more responsibilities,” said Kaitlynn McGinnis

The fake  baby will only be turned off for school work and practices. The Instructor, Mrs. Vaughn, is able to make the baby turn on and off. She is also able to choose what level it is on that day. The levels are Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard and Very Hard. The Very Hard one is the sick baby—and that is when it wakes up all the time, throughout the night.

“Even though I have a little brother, and knew how to take care of  babies. I still had a hard time with taking care of this one. My mom wasn’t always around to help me,” Cheyenne Mculley

All students are encouraged to take this class to learn that a baby is more responsibility than any teenager is ready for. It also helps them to know how to take care of a child. And since the baby is only turned off during certain times, they have to take the baby everywhere, and face all of the weird looks that they get from some people.
