ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR MARCH 11

THRIFTWAY RECEIPTS -- We are again taking Thriftway receipts to help with educational items the school might need. Please make sure you keep saving them and through March 30 and drop them off at the HES office as you get them collected.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS - BOWL FOR KID'S SAKE -- Big Brothers Big Sisters - Bowl for Kids' Sake Information below. March 26th in Hiawatha. Pick a 2 hour slot out of the 4pm - 10pm times. Jane Crider is the Vice President of the BBBS Board and she is looking for anyone interested in putting a team together to help raise money for kids in OUR community. All of the money stays in Nemaha and Brown County. Big changes were made this year and Angie McGuire is now the Executive Director for Nemaha and Brown County. Most or all prizes WILL be awarded the night of the event (worst case scenario - no later than a week after the event). Big prizes this year include a Wii for the person who gets the most pledges and a night stay at the Great Wolf Lodge for the team (up to 6 people) who collect the most pledges, plus many more door prizes and gift certificates. The goal is for each bowler to gain pledges of $100 but is not required to participate in the bowl. Jane has additional information and pledge sheets for all of those interested!

STATE TESTING DATES FOR MARCH-- HES 4TH GRADE STATE READING ASSESSMENTS -- MARCH 11 HES 3RD GRADE STATE READING ASSESSMENTS -- MARCH 16, 18, 19 HES 4TH GRADE STATE SCIENCE ASSESSMENTS -- MARCH 23, 25

HES CANNED FOOD DRIVE - MARCH 8-19 Hiawatha Elementary will be having a canned food drive from March 8-19 to help out the local food pantry. The cans will be collected in the classrooms and the classroom collecting the most will have an ice cream party given by the kitchen staff.

MARCH 12 - NO SCHOOL There will be no school for students on March 12 due to a teacher work day and staff development.

MARCH 14 - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

HES SITE COUNCIL AND PTA - MARCH 15 There will be an HES Site Council meeting at 5:15 and a PTA meeting at 6:15 in the library at the elementary school.

MARCH 29-APRIL 2 - SPRING BREAK There will be no school from Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2. School will resume on Monday, April 5.

MARCH WORD OF THE MONTH - COURAGE The character word for the month of March is *COURAGE.* Courage is a general term implying fearlessness in the presence of danger. Having courage to do something, is being brave and bold to do it, ( the willingness to try). Having courage also means to do what is right, even when no one is watching. It takes courage to do your best, especially when things have not always worked out before. Part of courage is the ability to believe in yourself, and to always keep trying, that never give up attitude. Always taking that next step up towards what you want to succeed in. Having courage will help you to accomplish many things.

KINDERGARTEN WILL MAKE UP DAYS -- Due to missing a significant number of days this year, Kindergarten classes will need to make up some days. The dates are as follows: March 19, March 26, April 9, April 16, April 30. ALL kindergartners will need to attend on these dates.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS - BROWN COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY LOGO CONTEST-- The Brown County Humane Society is having a Logo Contest. There are no age restrictions. Entry fee is $5.00, no limit on number of entries, but each drawing should be sent in separately along with a separate entry form and $5.00. Entry forms have been sent home with every student and are also available at HES or several other locations and The entry form, fee, and drawing should be mailed to BCHS Logo Contest, PO Box 123, Hiawatha, KS 66434 by April 15.

APRIL 7 - PLC LATE START DAY

APRIL 8 - HES SPRING PICTURES Hiawatha Elementary will have spring pictures taken for all students on April 8 beginning at 8:30. Parents will have the choice after they get them back whether or not they want to purchase them. Children WILL NOT be allowed to bring props this year.

APRIL 20 - HES SPRING CONCERT FOR 1ST & 3RD GRADES The HES Spring Concert for 1st and 3rd graders will be on Tuesday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the high school auditorium.

APRIL 21 - PLC LATE START DAY

APRIL 23 - HES 1ST & 2ND GRADE GRANDPARENT'S DAY

APRIL 23 - NO KINDERGARTEN CLASSES WILL BE HELD. There will be no kindergarten classes due to the Kindergarten Round Up for next years students coming in.

APRIL 23 - THIRD GRADE FIELD TRIP DAY

APRIL 23 - HES KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP There will be kindergarten round-up on April 23 at two different times. Parents should bring their child that day and choose one session to attend - either 9:00-10:00 a.m. or 1:30-2:30 p.m. Please bring the child's immunization record and official birth certificate from the state. Hospital letters or certificates will not be accepted. The state requires that we have an official certificate with the state number on it in our files.

APRIL 29 - 4TH GRADE EARTH DAY

MAY 7 - 1ST & 2ND GRADE FIELD TRIP DAY

MAY 7 - 3RD & 4TH GRADE GRANDPARENT'S DAY
