Lady Hawks claim the first victory of the season
Hiawatha’s lady Red Hawks secured their first win of the season on Friday, Dec. 8. The Red Hawks beat the Riverside Cyclones 40-37, with Riley and Byrd leading their teams in points scored.
The Hawks didn’t seem to have their heads in the game in the first quarter. Almost immediately after tip off, Kettler was called for her first foul of the night. Cyclones O’Grady scored both free throws, giving Riverside an early advantage of 2-0. Although Hiawatha had some fouls and plays go their way, Riverside controlled the first quarter to end it with a score of 10-8.
Hiawatha quickly got focused in the second and made a number of free throws when sent to the line by the Cyclones. Six of Hiawatha’s twelve points in the quarter came from shooting at the foul line. Riverside, on the other hand, only managed to gain three points in the second quarter. The teams went to the half with a 20-13 Red Hawk lead.
In the third quarter, Hiawatha made good shots and gained 9 points. Riverside went a step further, however, scoring 10 off of fouls and good shots. The third quarter ended at 29-23, Hiawatha.
The fourth quarter was a game of fouls as the teams went back and forth between foul lines. 11 of the cumulative points scored in the quarter were the result of free throws. 12 more points were cumulatively scored during plays. Both teams caught in foul trouble, Riverside’s Miller, Brewer, and Hawkins each fouled out before the end of the game. Despite all of the fouls and good plays of the close quarter, the final score was 40-37 Hiawatha with the win.
