Intro to American Folklore: what we know so far
As many members of the student body are aware, there will be a new class offered at Hiawatha High School. This new class will be Introduction to American Folklore, and here’s what we know about it so far: it will be offered by Mrs.Davis, it will be a second semester class, and it will be classified as an ELA elective.
This class will cover American folklore and its roots. It will begin with the art of oral storytelling and will cover such topics as folkloric crafts. Among these crafts and events will be an assignment that will include making a toy that pertains to folkloric culture. Davis has said that the class will be traveling to Kansas City to celebrate and participate in Cinco de Mayo festivities.
Whether it is just for upperclassmen or if it is offered to everyone is yet to be determined. The sign up for this class is limited, and Davis said she would like the class to be about 20 in size, and no bigger.
We also know that Intro. to American Folklore is replacing Public Speaking. As Public Speaking is no longer offered for college credit, Davis can no longer teach the class under the same standards through Highland Community College.
