Local cheerleader to travel to Florida
Local high school cheerleader Michelle Russell has been chosen to attend the annual All-American Cheer Team event in Florida this winter. The All-American Cheer Team is a team composed of talented young cheerleaders who compose the top ten percent of student cheerleaders, pom squad members and twirlers from across the United States.
Russell will be traveling to Orlando and training with the other cast members to perform at the Great All-American Halftime Show during the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day. Her trip will extend from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2.
Russell was one of five girls nominated by her coaches, but the only one to qualify for the All-American Team, a high achievement for cheerleaders anywhere. She was nominated at cheer camp back in June on account of her talents in tumbling.
This means that she will be representing all of the Hiawatha High School Cheer Squad, a great honor bestowed upon her because of her merits as a cheerleader. Russell will get to work with top coaches and choreographers during her time in Orlando, which could possibly lead to bigger opportunities for her cheer career down the road.
“This event will help me build a network of peers as well as gain exposure to world class coaches and choreographers. Some of the people could be college recruiters,” Russell explains.
This coincides with Russell’s plans of going to college on a cheer scholarship.
The HHS junior is currently raising money to attend this trip.
“Of course I would like to raise as much as possible to offset the cost for my mom. She is a single parent and works really hard to give me these opportunities. The entire cost for the trip, including travel expenses, is $3,077.”
Russell and her mother have already received one business pledge of five hundred dollars, and are hoping to receive more business sponsors. However, she goes on to explain that every donation helps by putting her one step closer to offsetting costs.
Russell will wear a tee shirt displaying all of her sponsors as well as having them displayed on her spirit banner at the hotel in which she will be staying.
