Varsity scholar's bowl traveled to Perry to participate in the league meet on Monday the 9th. The team has been very competitive all year and expected to do well at the meet. Last year the Hiawatha team won league and this year it was hoped that we could be one of the school challenging for the top spot again. Some teams are very competitive when they are winning but lose focus when they have lost and have no chance of moving on. When you lose it shows your character on how you deal with it. Winning is easy: losing is not. Getting back to the meet; we lost the first two rounds and were out of the running for the top spots. They could have thrown in the towel and just gave up. However, they competed and won 4 out of the next 5 rounds. At the end they had a winning record but came short of medals or trophies. Team members included Johanna Brockoff, Kristy Ladner, Sammie Shamburg, Tyler Tryon, Elliot Bicker, and Cale Heiniger.
We did not bring home the league title or medals for top places but the team came home winners. Being a competitor when losing or not finishing in the top spot makes you a winner on any team and makes you a winner at life. The varsity team definitely were WINNERS at the league meet.
We travel to Perry again on Wednesday for another varsity meet and then have regionals on February 2 in Chapman.
