The Hiawatha Elementary Physical Education classes spent the last two weeks in February talking about the Winter Olympics that were being held in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada.  Each day we would share the highlights of the previous days events and how the American team was doing.  We also looked at the medals count.

Our main focus for the two weeks was to adapt some of the Olympic events to the gym and try them out.  The activities included:  speed skating using paper plates for skates,  skeleton, luge and bobsled using the scooters, biathlon using carpet squares for skis and tossing beanbags at the target.  We also practiced dribbling hockey pucks and curling.   We would discuss each event and then give it a try.

The students showed excitement and would come in each day with stories of what they saw on the television coverage of the games in Vancouver.  They would check outside the gym door each morning for the latest medal count.
