2nd Grade Gets Down to Earth with Ancient History
by The Second Grade Teachers
February 01, 2010
Second graders gathered around to hear the thrilling tale of a boy and his dinosaur bone. Not found in the pages of a library book, but the true story of Dave Wilson of Hiawatha. His wife, Debbie Wilson brought his treasured dino tooth to share the story with us to help students get an idea of the size of the creatures we read about in Super Croc. Students learned that while the tooth is a fantastic find, it is "common" in the world of paleontologists. The mastodon tooth measured in at ten inches by five inches. With ten to twelve cusps and weighing as much as a sack of flour, this massive tooth made our students tremble at the thought of the size of these beasts. Students were able to ask questions about the tooth and about her husbands find 50 years ago! We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Wilson for sharing their family heirloom with our second graders and helping to enrich a fantastic story!
