Theater and Drama

by Cassi Buss

February 01, 2010

Theater & Drama is a really exciting, new class at HHS! It is taught by instructor, Patti Davis. Students get the chance to express themselves, not only through words but through actions, too. Drama is a good place to meet new friends. Students get grouped up with people they never talk to and sooner or later they end up being friends and talking here and there. Their social life expands. In drama, students can also get rid of that stage fright they have always been dreading.

“Being in this class is exciting and challenging all at the same time. It’s helped me overcome stage fright and grow as a person, too.” - Alisha Clift

In the Theater & Drama class, the first thing students get to do is get up on the stage and act out little things the teacher tells them to do. It could be a thirty second mime act or a one minute act with a partner about anything they’d like. They can even put on a certain item and act out what a person wearing that item would do. An example would be putting on a fire fighter hat and pretending to put out a fire to save a family. More things that students do on stage are playing acting games, pretending to die because someone winked at them. They also get to do trust games. Some trust games are falling into someone’s arms backwards, picking someone up with their two fingers and holding them in the air with a group of people. There are many things to do on stage and it’s a lot of fun. In addition, there are many things students do in class too. Some classroom assignments have been sewing, learning parts of the stage, learning about stages all over the world, making their own character to act out on stage, coming up with different mime plays and many more.

“It’s fun. I get to sew a lot, I guess.” - Tyson Maples

Theater & Drama is a really fun class and it’s a great way for students to explore themselves and get out of their shell. They will learn new things just like with any other class but get to learn things physically that have to do with acting. Students may think that acting isn’t their thing and they will think that Theater is all about acting but it’s not, they get to relax and sew sometimes too. They don’t have to get up in front of everybody and act every day. That’s not what it’s all about. It’s about expressing yourself.

“This class is fun and challenging. I’m glad I took this class because I learned to get out of my comfort zone.” - Emily Atlakson
