The College English students at Hiawatha High School have been hard at work trying to understand and create unique poetry. Just before Winter Break, Mrs. Davis, the senior English teacher, started her students on a new unit. Although some of the students were hesitant about this new unit, others were excited to get started.
“I was pretty pumped when Mrs. Davis said we got to write our own poems. I mean, I’m pretty good at poetry, not to brag or anything,” replied Antuan Grier when asked how he felt about starting the unit.
College English students kicked off the unit by reading several pieces of poetry. These pieces of poetry varied from poems about life occupations, nature, and even death. Not only are the students reading poetry and learning about poets, they are also creating poetry of their own. Each student made a poetry book and had to have it completed by the day of the test. These poetry books were made up of haiku, free verse, syllabic, and many other different types of poetry.
Jessica Schulenberg had already found one of her favorite types of poems. “I really enjoy creating haikus because they’re from Japan and they sound cool.”
Although the poetry unit is almost over, the knowledge the students have learned on writing poems will possibly help them in the future. Hopefully during the week of January 24th, the students will remember all the information they have obtained and will receive a promising grade for their College English class on the test and poetry book.
