Colby Community College’s Veterinary Technology and Pre-Vet Programs
by Cathy Robert
October 30, 2009
The College would like any students interested in working as a vet tech or taking pre-veterinary medicine to know that their institution offers both programs.
Pre-veterinary medicine is a two-year transfer program. The goal of the typical pre-vet student is to enter a college of veterinary medicine in KS or one of the surrounding states. Students should have long-range goals in mind when they enter this program, as it takes a minimum of seven years to complete a D.V.M. degree.
The vet tech (V.T.) program is also 2 years, but is career-oriented. Graduates are qualified to find employment with veterinarians after graduation. This College is the home of the state’s only VT program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and recognized by KS veterinarians. Program graduates typically are able to interview for several positions. Upward mobility is increasing as universities and corporations seek experienced vet techs. NOTE: Applications received after the priority date of March 15 will be accepted on a space-available basis. After this time, consideration will be given to students on the basis of specific scoring criteria (transcripts, ACT scores, medical exam, etc.)
Students interested in either program are encouraged to contact Jennifer L. Martin, D.V.M., the Director of the Veterinary Technology Program: 785-460-5466 or jennifer.martin@colbycc.edu.
