Seventh Graders Learn the Art of Persuasion
by Lisa Twombly
February 23, 2010
Seventh graders have been learning about persuasive techniques used in advertising. We also had a short lesson concerning propaganda and how it was successfully used during World War II. As the culminating activity, students were placed in small groups to write, produce, and film their very own commercials. Students then enjoyed watching and critiquing each others’ advertisements. They assigned stars based on a five star rating, identified persuasive techniques that were utilized, made one positive comment, and gave one piece of constructive criticism. Finally, students used all of the data from their peer reviews to complete a problem solving activity. The task was to make a determination about the quality of their advertisement based on the opinions of classmates.
If you would like to view the DVD, please have your child check it out for an evening and enjoy watching it together.
