Expression Shown by Portfolio Students in Art Classes

by Antuan Grier

February 01, 2010

What is art; but an expression of one’s inner self? Working to be more creative and visually showing people parts of oneself is a beautiful practice. A vast majority of people think that art is nothing but coloring and painting, but it is much more than that. Art is a living being, ever growing and changing as humans change adapting to cultures. This is why Art is one of the most important subjects of all.

At Hiawatha high school there are many Art classes to suit any style of artist; from Advanced Sculpting, to Drawing and Painting. Within these classes there is an elite group, referred to as the "portfolio students". As portfolio students they are not bound by the same rules that apply to the other art students. They do not receive assignments and deadlines. They must be self reliant and creative. They are asked only one thing and that is to create art.

Portfolio students learn to amplify their artistic talent by trial and error. Just as the artists dating all the way back to the Renaissance did. It is a great experience and students really enjoy the portfolio art class.  Jessica Schulenberg and Verdell Haws commented that they enjoy the creative freedoms Mr. Little allows in the class.
