The legislature provides an opportunity for foster care children to enroll in Kansas educational institutions WITHOUT payment of tuition and fees. The student will only be responsible for other charges associated with their academic program such as books and room/board, etc.
Eligibility criteria are:
(1) in the custody of SRS and in a foster care placement at age 18
(2) released from SRS’s care prior to their 18th birthday
(3) adopted from foster care on or after age 16 or
(4) left foster care placement on or after age 16 subject to guardianship, to enroll in Kansas educational institutions without payment of tuition and required fees.
Enrollment without payment of tuition and required fees means that an eligible student will be allowed to enroll WITHOUT payment of the tuition and the fees required of all students at the time of enrollment. The student would only be responsible for other charges associated with their academic program and living costs, like books, room, and board.
This program provides for undergraduate enrollment of students through the semester they reach age 23.
The applicant may be eligible for assistance for yet OTHER costs of higher education as well, through SRS.
Where may eligible students for this program attend college or vo-tech? They may attend area vocational schools, area vocational-technical schools, community colleges, municipal universities, state educational institutions or technical colleges.
An application for these scholarship monies is available in the Counseling Office. More information can be obtained from the regional SRS office.
