As a 6th grader, students must know and be able to apply the formulas for finding the perimeter and area of a regular shape, such as: squares, rectangles, and triangles. One way we practiced using these two formulas was by actually measuring shapes. Different sizes of rectangles and squares were created using masking tape and put on the floor out in the hallway. Partner pairs then practiced measuring the shapes to the nearest inch. Once they had all of their measurements, they were then able to use their information to find the perimeter and area of each shape. The students were also asked the question: "Can a shape have the same perimeter and area?" Students found that this was possible, depending upon the length and width of each shape.
