Karen Searight, Spanish Teacher

by Karen Searight

November 12, 2008

Señora Searight was born in Topeka, Kansas and educated in Kansas, Oklahoma, and New York, where she graduated in 1973 from Benjamin N. Cardoza H.S. in Bayside, Queens. She received bachelor's degrees in French and History from Fort Hays State University in 1977. Her passion for languages led her to study some Russian in college and later add Spanish as an endorsement to her teaching certificate while picking up some graduate hours at KU. In 2008 she completed her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in instructional technology from Peru State College in Nebraska. Searight has been married to Family Practice physician, Lowell Searight, since 1977. They are empty-nesters, with two college-age children, Maggie and Randall, both graduates of HHS. She has traveled extensively in and out of the U.S., and has studied abroad, spending 2 summers in Mexico. She LOVES to travel, claiming to be part gypsy since she wouldn't mind living out of a suitcase. Other interests include reading, gardening, her beloved Jayhawks, and listening to all kinds of music--even (gasp!) rap. This marks her 25th year here at HHS. One of her favorite things about teaching is seeing that light bulb go on when a student finally "gets it." She also loves sharing her enthusiasm for places and cultures outside of Hiawatha, America. Her favorite quote: "To have another language is to possess another soul."
