Dawn Stephens

Special Education Teacher

Dawn Stephens has taught in the area of Special Education for the past 27 years. She received her bachelor’s degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska. Her Master’s degree in education was completed in December 2006 from Baker University.

Dawn started teaching the fall of 1984 within the Hiawatha/Horton school districts working with severally multiply disabled and mentally retarded. During the middle 1980’s through the 1990’s, Dawn was involved with the State Department of Education in being one of the first teachers to implement inclusion and community based instruction for more severally involved students. Currently she is an IRC teacher at Hiawatha High school where she has taught for the last 9 years. She serves students in grades 9-12 in all areas of academic need. 

Dawn moved to Hiawatha in 1984, she married Ken Stephens (Beefy) in 1987. They have two children. Derek (Beef) who is currently working at Pizza Hut. Their daughter, Allie is a Sophomore in college. During her free time Dawn enjoys walking, knitting, and reading. Dawn looks at each student as a new experience in which she will do her best so that each student is successful at Hiawatha High School.
