May 19, 2008

On Wednesday, May 14, the environthon team traveled to the Wolf Creek Energy Center near Burlington to participate in the State Environmental Contest, after qualifying at the regional competition. Members making up the team this year include Brian Butrick, Becky Barnes, Hannah Roland, Grant Stoner, Megan Tryon and Ryan Vitt.

During the competition, the team collaborates on a five-part test based on the categories of Forestry, Current Issues, Wildlife, Aquatics and Soils. In the category of Current Issues, the team won third place based on the issue of “The impact of Recreation on National Resources.” They narrowly missed medaling in aquatics, finishing in fourth place, just 1.5 points behind third.

Overall, the team, coached by science teacher Chris Vitt, came in eighth place.

“I am proud of our team for accomplishing what we did,” said Roland, a three-year member of the team. “It was a good experience.”
