Tips For Motivating Young Readers

by Becky Schwanke

April 17, 2008

This time of year it is hard to keep students motivated.  Here are a few tips to help.

            1.  Set a good example for your child by showing him/her that you enjoy reading.  Keep lots of books and magazines around the house.  Let your child see you reading.

            2.  Share a book with your child.  Either read it aloud or let him/her read it to you.  Set a regular time and place for reading.

            3.  If your child is a reluctant reader, make a game out of reading everyday things like cereal boxes, junk mail, or comics.

            4.  Above all, make reading a positive experience.  Be sure that you "get" to read, not "have" to read.  Read, relax, and enjoy reading TOGETHER.
