Fine Dining with the Red Hawks

Olive Garden Gets the Vote

by Nicole Torkelson, LeAnn Schuetz, Camron Leupold, Deyra Pino, Luke Lucas

April 14, 2008

Food is always an interesting topic. Not just because everyone needs it to live but also there are so many unusual types. That is really why the group, which consisted of Luke Lucas, Camron Leupold, LeAnn Schuetz, Nicole Torkelson, and Deyra Pino, chose food as the subject to survey the student body about. They asked the students various questions such as, "What's your favorite restaurant?", "What meal do you like to eat the most?", "What's your favorite kind of food (Mexican, American, Italian, etc.)?" and "What drink do you enjoy the most?" It was no surprise that out of about ninety students who took the survey the answers were various. The results get even more interesting when you tie more than one data bases together and find out what people are fond of besides food stuff. The other survey questions, which other groups from other classes did, dealt with sports, movies, shopping, attraction and even candy colors.

Through class group came upon a lot of interesting information such as: out of the 14 people who drank mountain dew, from the 84 people who where originally polled, 30% preferred red skittles. Out of the 38 people who ate blue M&Ms 14% preferred to eat Italian food. Out of the 39 girls who participated in our survey 40% of them choice olive garden as their favorite restaurant. The 8 people who ate Mexican food preferred to watch comedy movies by 70%.

One hundred and twelve people were polled for the movies table and eighty-four people were polled for the food table. The data was collected by polling the students; queries were made to make relationships with two class surveys and then they came up with questions and results. The group used the Microsoft Access Database program to do this. Of the five students that like comedy and Mexican food there is one freshman, two juniors, and two seniors. Three of the five students are boys and the other two are girls. Of the four students that prefer to watch movies at home and drink Mt. Dew there is one girl and three boys. There are two freshmen, one junior, and one senior.

It's pretty interesting to know how as one grows up you can still have some things in common with people who are younger than you. Eighty-four students were polled in this survey and every single grade participated. 40% of the freshmen and sophomores like to eat at McDonalds and the other 60% liked to go to their preferred restaurant. Nonetheless 30% of the juniors and seniors preferred to go to Olive Garden while the rest liked to go to some other restaurants. As the foods poll was compared to another poll that was done having to do with what people are attracted to in the opposite sex some similarity and differences were noticed. The similarity that they have in common would be that 85% of all the students that participated in this survey were attracted to people that dress nice and casual. The two differences that they have would be that more than 50% of the juniors and seniors who took the survey are attracted to people who are taller than them. However 70% the freshmen and sophomores are attracted to people that are the average height.

This group of students in the Computer Applications class learned a great deal about their classmates by polling students on what kind of food, drink, type of food, and restaurant they most liked. Also, they made connections with data other groups collected on different topics. For example, one student found that 30% of the people who drank mountain dew preferred red skittles. Another student found that 63% of the students who liked Mexican food also liked comedy movies. Those are just a few of the connections that students in this group made. They also made connections to other group’s data.
